Strata is an invitation to attention and contemplation. This editioned sculpture explores time and chronology through a collection of objects, artifacts and artworks that I have acquired over the last eight years. These objects have been scanned, sliced, cored, and 3d printed into sections that can be stacked over a cylindrical light bulb. Like an inverted core sample, Strata reveals what is outside of the core, collapsing fixed geologic chronology by arranging itself in an order that is movable. Designed as a performative object, it is intended be taken apart by the viewer and reordered endlessly, releasing the objects from any fixed sequence of origin and opening the form to hundreds of thousands of potential configurations - an ever-shifting cross-section of time and light.
Strata is visually and conceptually related to Subterra, my 2019 commissioned installation for Socrates Sculpture Park that explored time as it is manifested by the invisible flow of water through the earth’s circulatory system. To make this piece, I created a four vertical molds that could be filled to different levels to create a near infinite variety of individual pieces and stacked vertical compositions. In Strata, I invite viewers into this playful design system, to assemble and reassemble, to observe and contemplate a movable history of objects and artifacts and to create new sequences of memory and action.
